Getting started

A smart home starts with a simple question.

What would make everyday life at home a little easier? Use that answer as your guide, then take one practical step at a time.

1. Choose a moment, not a shopping list

Think about a repeated part of your day: arriving home with your hands full, getting the living room ready for the evening, or remembering to turn things off before bed. A clear use case makes it easier to decide what is useful and what is just interesting.

Try this: Write down one task you repeat most days. Ask whether a scene, reminder or sensor would genuinely improve it.

2. Check the basics of your home

Reliable connectivity and accessible controls matter more than the number of devices. Walk through the rooms where you want to add technology and check Wi-Fi coverage. If you are renovating, discuss wiring and switch locations with your electrician before walls are closed.

  • Check that devices work with the platform you plan to use.
  • Look for a clear way to use key functions if the internet is unavailable.
  • Keep guests and less technical household members in mind.
  • For electrical work, engage a licensed electrician.

3. Make a small first setup

One room and one routine are enough to learn what works. Keep the setup for a while before you add more devices. You will discover where automation is welcome and where a familiar switch is still best.

4. Consider local rules and privacy

In Singapore, home type and building management can affect what you can install. Check applicable HDB renovation requirements or MCST by-laws before changing wiring, locks, doors or common-facing areas. Place cameras carefully and tell people in the home how they are used.

“The best smart home is one that everyone at home can understand and use.”

5. Keep it easy to maintain

Give devices clear names, record essential setup information somewhere safe, and review routines when your schedule changes. Simple systems tend to be the ones you still enjoy using a year later.
